To some, the idea of collecting items such as stamps and coins seems a rather boring hobby to have. Indeed, the dull stereotype has been parodied in many a comedy sketch – from TV to comic books. However, it is the enthusiasts who could have the last laugh, as their collectibles could prove to be a useful cash cow in these dark times of the credit crunch. One man’s tat could prove to be another’s addition to an ever-growing collection, and if he’s willing to pay for it you can find yourself making some useful cash, which can come in very handy for debt management.
Memorabilia sales have seen an increase in recent times, and television programmes such as the Antiques Roadshow and Cash In The Attic have helped to bring the idea to the masses. Since then, many have dusted off their ornaments and had them valued and sold at auction – sometimes with surprising results.
And with more of us looking to alternative means of raising money to clear debt, the attic could indeed be a great place to start. Unearthing hidden gems in amongst all the tat may sound like a ridiculous idea, but if done right can lead to some much needed cash towards solving your debt problems.
Rarity counts in antique circles and collectors will most likely contest highly for items which are limited edition or one-off. However, any damage will not help your cause, as this can lower the value of the item – however in the case of items such as furniture there are those who will buy in order to spend time restoring items to their former glory.
When getting an item valued, be sure to do your research beforehand, there are a wide range of helpful books that cater for valuing all kinds of collectibles. Many make use of internet auction sites in order to do business, either paying to ship the item upon receiving payment or arranging collection in person. Indeed, sites like eBay have sections that cater for certain items, which make it easier for collectors to locate rare items.
So before you bung that old football programme in a box and take it to the car boot sale, or throw that family heirloom in the bin, just bear in mind that there may just be a collector who will gladly pay to take it off your hands, earning you a bit of extra cash in the process.
